Labradorite Heart Cabochons.  The iridescent property of labradorite results from light diffracting off closely spaced layers of calcium and sodium rich feldspar and is called labradorescence. As the stone is turned, flashes of blue, green, yellow, and red are visible across properly oriented surfaces.  Each unbacked cabochon is approximately 26-30mm.  Mohs hardness is 6-6.5.

Description

Labradorite Heart Cabochons.

Inuits once called labradorite a “fire stone” and used powdered forms to help cure physical ailments.  Legend has it that an Inuit warrior saw the Northern Lights trapped in rocks and struck them with his spear to free some of the lights.

Labradorite was discovered in Labrador, a Canadian province on the Isle of Paul.  Labradorite is also found in Mexico, Russia and Finland. A rarer, richer form of the feldspar, called Spectrolite, is found in Finland.
