Description
Indigo-colored iolite is known for its pleochroism, which is to say the gem appears to be different colors when viewed at different angles. Vikings used this mineral as a navigational tool on overcast days because it easily detected the direction of the sun’s rays. Likewise, some believe iolite can aid in finding lost parts of the self. Today, iolite is found in Burma, Brazil, and India. Mohs hardness: 7-7.5
