Second in hardness only to the diamond, the sapphire is one of two types of corundum, the other being the ruby. Sapphires occur in every color but red, though the most desirable is a pure cornflower blue. Sapphires are thought to have the most profound effect on the mental plane, stimulating clairvoyance, telepathy, and astral projection. Sapphires are found in Australia, Burma, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The sapphire is the birthstone for September. Mohs hardness: 9
