For centuries, coral has been used in jewelry-making around the world, with the oldest known examples dating to 3,000 B.C.  Revered in Italy, Greece, Persia, China, Tibet, Spain, and the Americas, the material was often made into amulets to be worn at the throat.  Legends of corals’ mystical qualities vary across cultures, but common threads are protection from illness and injury, particularly for children.  Occurring in red, pink, white, and black, jewelry-grade coral is found in the Mediterranean, Malaysia, Japan, and Hawaii.
