Description
The dentalium shells originate from the Pacific Northwest of the United States and the west side of Canada. They tend to be found deep underwater, commonly near Vancouver Island. Today, Dentalium shells are becoming increasingly rare and difficult to source. The shells have a hardness of around 3.5 on the Mohs’ scale, similar to that of a copper penny. They are reasonably lightweight, comparable to amber. These shells are traditionally used in hair ornaments, long earrings, necklaces, and bridal garments.
